Hercules The Waggoner is a picture tile from the "Children's Fables" series designed by Walter Crane. Mosaic Tile of Zanesville, Ohio produced this series of children's picture tiles. Printed at the bottom right is the moral of the story "The gods help those who help themselves." This came after Hercules had requested one of the gods to help him free his wagon wheel from the mud. The reply: "No such luck; set your shoulder yourself to the wheel." The artwork is done in warm, rich colors with an overall golden tone and soft glaze finish. There are tiny nicks around the edges - all are old and darkly colored. The tile is 6 x 6 inches square.
