This French Choisy-Le-Roi vessel stands 8" high by 5" in diameter. It was produced by Hippolyte Boulenger of Hippolyte Boulenger & Cie, in the Choisy-le-Roi region of France, just outside of Paris. The company was started in 1804, and went through a number of changes through the 1800s, with Hippolyte taking charge in the 1860s. The company continued into the 1930s before closing for good. This vase, which we believe dates to circa 1890s because of its glaze application, has a wonderfully classic full-bodied form. It is decorated in a barnyard motif, with a rooster and a hen on the front, and a classic ranch fence scene on the back. It is glazed in a deep brown standard glaze, with magnificent colors in the decoration. The scenes are spectacularly executed, very crisp details. This vase is well marked on the base with the HB & Cie mark, which dates to the 1890s. This impressive vessel is in excellent condition for a pot that is nearly 130 years old, with an old restoration to a rim chip on the backside. If you collect French pottery, here's your chance to add an exceptionally glazed vessel to your collection!
