This Mettlach stein stands 5.5" high to the top of its original pewter lid, by 4" in diameter. This stein has a classic stout form, with a crested portrait motif. It is a one-half liter stein, shape #1431. It has a crested portrait design over a tapestry-textured surface, and it is handsomely presented in a rainbow of rich, deep colors over a tan/beige ground, and finished to a nice semi- matte glaze. The portrait depicts two men at a pub bar, with steins of beer and one is smoking, with a halo of smoke enveloping the air. It is entitled in German script 'Geruch.', which translates to 'Odor.', an obvious reference to the smoke from the smoker's cigar. The details on this stein are great, including tactile slip in the whisps of smoke! This stein has its original pewter thumblift, and pewter lid, which has a slight gentle bend in the metal, shown in the second photo. This stein, number 1431, has the hallmarks of Mettlach steins as can be seen in the photos, with the numbers '15', presumably for 1915. This stein is in mint condition, with just the slight bend in the pewter lid's side edge. It makes a very cheerful presentation!
