This set of vintage Galvano Bronze Company metal bookends measures 7" high by 4.5" across by 3" wide. They depict a wise old Owl in front of the Moon, and standing on a stepped base, a classic presentation and old world style, made around 1920. The details on this set are exquisitely executed. These bookends are made of a heavy spelter jacket, a mix of white metals, with a great old world bronze-colored patina, which is rich and supple on this set. They are filled with a composition and weigh in at a solid 4.25 pounds for the set, so they are truly made to hold books. This set is marked with impressed numbers '117' on the backside of the bases, and we believe they are Galvano Bronze because of their telltale vertically-lined backsides, a signature style for this company. This very hard-to-find set is in excellent timeworn condition, with folds and pleats in the metal jacket at the base of the owl, and minor stress breaks in the jacket in that area. They have acquired a wonderful deep bronze patina, with small bits of verde green from oxidation. They would make a wonderful addition to any room or library!
