This exquisite Art Nouveau purse measures 7" to the top of the clasp by 4" across, and 12" from handle tip to toe. The body is beaded with fine teal green glass beads woven in a vertical presentation, with black glass beaded swags. Everything about this purse speaks of quality in workmanship, it's a beautiful object. The crowning jewel of this purse is its frame. It has the nicest frame we've seen on a 1900 period purse. It is 'squarish' in a silvertone metal, perhaps silverplate, with a clasp closure, which closes with a gentle snap. The handle is a loose chain link with fine filigreed blossom tabs. The frame is filigreed and pierced with an outstanding Art Nouveau blossom medalion motif, it's simply stunning. The interior lining is gone, but its original coin case and mirror remain attached to the interior, with frayed remains of its original satin/taffeta lining, but still attached with their original silver strings. The coin pouch has a small tear by the snap closure. There is a large swatch of black taffeta in the purse, likely planned as a replacement liner, which we've left in the pouch. The original trim that encased the lining remains intact as can be seen in the photos. There are no markings on the purse to identify its maker, but we guarantee this purse to be c1900. The interior lining is the only obvious issue with this purse, with just general wear from more than 100 years of age. The beading and swags look to be intact, and its ornate frame, makes it an absolute jewel. This purse comes from a collection of purses from the late 1800s into the 1920s from a Massachusetts estate.
