Mother Of Pearl Shell Sewing, Household Chatelaine, French, c1730-1860 PRICE REDUCTION
On offer is a mother of pearl sewing chatelaine from France. Worn on a belt around the waist, the chatelaine allowed easy access to the tools needed for sewing and small tasks.
The total length of the chatelaine is 10.5 inches and consists of: 1) Decorated clip to fit on the belt measuring 1.75 x 1.9 inches, this has 5 chains all decorated 2) A mother a pearl needle or bodkin case measuring 3.75 inches. The mother of pearl has been carved. 3) A magic pencil measuring 1.75 inches open or 1.5 inches closed. 4) A magnificent mother of pearl etui with carving measuring 4 x 1.5 inches. Sadly no tools survived from inside the etui. 5) A thimble “bucket” measuring 1 inch with an old brass thimble 6) A perfume flask measuring 1.5 inches (so essential to combat odours)
This interesting example has attachments from 1730 to 1860. This chatelaine was handed down in one family from mother to daughter, who would add their own favorite tools, or to replace missing tools.
