DRAGON'S BREATH BROOCH

This large brooch is magnificent!

The fantastic brooch is made from solid sterling silver

This beautiful pin is unmarked as many of these pieces were back then, but dose appear to have and old inventory mark on it, of 2161 at the bottom

The focal point of this wonderful brooch is a large Dragon's Breath Opal

This dazzling glass stone is about 18 x 26 millimeters and is red with iridescent blue flashes of color in it

The color is made by adding real gold the glass when it is being made. Dragon's breath was invented in Czechoslovakia in the early 1900's. In the 1940's the process became cost prohibitive and that they had to stop making it. It was resumed again in Mexico and is made to this day there

On ether side of this remarkable pin is a sunburst design

At the very ends are stamped Thunderbird's and it stamped all around the edge with a repeating motif

The magnificent brooch is 7/8 inch wide by 2 3/4 inches long, and weights 19.3 grams

This is and exceptional and rare example of Fred Harvey Era jewelry

Dragon's Breath Opal is a collectors nickname for stones made of glass mixed with metals to induce a bi-color effect ranging from red to blue with an overall bright blue or purplish cast; flashes of color from within the stone are known as the "breath" from which the name is derived; first used in jewelry in the early 1900's to simulate fire/jelly opals; very often set in silver, these are most often cabochons in round or oval shapes which are un-foiled and transparent, but some faceted examples were used in mid-century costume jewelry

Fred Harvey Era ranged from the 1920's to the 1950's. The jewelry was sold in souvenir shops, hotels, train stations and National Parks all across the southwest. Made by Indian silversmiths for the Harvey Company for the flourishing tourist trade brought by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It is extremely connectable today!
