Great look and so pretty! Turquoise, Bali Silver and Sterling Silver are a classic combination of beauty. The necklace has a dramatic, but everyday feel; and I think the color is outstanding. Large well polished nuggets with black and brown matrix are Chinese turquoise and probably from the Xinjiang Province in China and stabilized for strength. The nuggets are 15-20mm x 17-20mm.
The closure on this necklace is a made of a loop of tiny Sterling Silver round beads slipped over a Sterling Silver wire wrapped Turquoise Nugget. Pretty enough to wear in front or back.
The necklace measures 19 inches excluding the loop clasp.
A word about Turquoise:
American Turquoise is becoming more and more scarce and collectors seem to be holding on to their prizes. It can also be expensive, since so many of the mines, including the Sleeping Beauty mine in Arizona have closed.
The Chinese have been mining turquoise for thousands of years, and even today they produce some very beautiful turquoise stones.
Volumes have been written about many stones being sold as genuine or natural turquoise; when in fact, they are jasper, magnesite, chalk turquoise, among others.
In current usage, "natural turquoise" is used in two ways. First, the phrase is used to describe turquoise that has not been treated in any way with dyes, stabilizing epoxies, or other chemical treatments intended to alter the color, hardness or luster of the stone. Natural turquoise cannot be easily found in the marketplace. The purist who seeks it is advised to buy direct from the mine. It has been claimed that as little as 3-10 percent of turquoise mined is of sufficient hardness to be used in jewelry without stabilization. Natural untreated turquoise is rare, indeed.
