On offer is this extraordinarily beautiful genuine 1940's Giovanni Apa's Bright Red Coral Necklace with a fine Gold Vermeil (gold wash over .835 Silver) Box Clasp with large Red Coral Cabochon that opens and closes tightly. The workmanship is incredible with the bright Red Coral being highly polished so it gleams with a high luster. These coral gems are perfectly matched in color and density attesting to their very high quality. The front of the necklace is hand woven in two rows with the back of the necklace being flat. In excellent condition for it's age with no damage. It measures 16.5 inches in length x 3/4 inch wide. The gems measure 4 mm in the front row and 3 mm in the top row. Both rows are woven together so the necklace lays flat on your necklace. This necklace has not been worn a lot and is very clean. Hallmarked AMEF and .835 on the clasp which means it's .835 silver as was usual for that era in Italy. Weight: 58.3 grams. There is a worldwide moratorium on the harvesting of coral so the prices of this now rare commodity are rising dramatically and Red Coral is being sought by collectors.
The label on the box that the necklace came in read: DITTA GIOVANNI APA CORALLO-CAMMEI-TARTARUGA TORRE DEL GRECO-( ITALIA). In 1848, Giovanni Apa, supreme Master goldsmith, founded his studio in Torre del Greco, a town on the Gulf of Naples at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, which since the time of the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples, is known worldwide as a center of excellence of coral works. Today, the company "LPM", heir of the founder’s art, continues the artisan activities in compliance with the passion and dedication handed down over the centuries.
I am also listing the matching earrings for this necklace in case you wish to keep them as a set.
