The story of the Hummel figurines is special. The charming figures of boys and girls capture viewer’s hearts and remind us of peaceful childhood times. The artist Berta Hummel was a Franciscan sister, born in 1909 in Germany. It was during her primary school years that she began to make cards and printed verses for family and friends of simple subjects like flowers birds and animals. In 1927 Berta moved to Munich and entered the Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. There she led the life of an artist and continued to paint. Berta’s art caught the attention of Franz Goebel in 1933 in the form of Christmas cards and in he conceived the idea of turning them into three-dimensional figures. Each figure, like Berta’s own paintings, is hand-painted and crafted with care. In the 1940s these figurines became increasingly popular as they provided heartwarming scenes of happy children, something much needed during WWII. Over the decade's people have continued to collect the charming figures and Sister Maria Innocentia (Berta Hummel) is known around the world.
