THis item is a BRASS VICTORIAN SKIRT LIFTER with SAILING MOTIF. These were is use in Victorian times to assist ladies in holding up the hems of their skirts for riding horses and bicycles , during stair climbing and at other times as evidenced by this one with the sailing motif. They are basically a tong like device that a lady would clamp on the hem of a skirt and hook the other end onto a waistband or chatelaine. This one is in excellent condition and measures 5" long. It is marked on the holder - FYFE'S Patent, Registered 1876.
