This item is a lovely and highly decorative HAND CARVED BLACK FOREST BAROMETER. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or breaks. It is in good working order. The case features beautifully carved traditional Black Forest elements including branches and leaves intertwined around the frame. There is a milk glass thermometer which reads in "R" Reaumur (which is an old French temperature scale) and "C" Celsius. The barometer features a German paper scale and is marked - Carl Marcus, Hamburg. Marcus was a retailer of optical devices and this was made for his store in the later 19th century. The barometer is of nice size measuring 19 1/2" H and 9 1/2" wide. It is not overwhelming in size and works nicely as an accent decorative piece. The works are aneroid and the face is open allowing one to view the inner works. The glass is nicely beveled and is help in place by a brass frame.
