Antique sterling silver vinaigrette box by Colen Chesire, circa 1886.
This is a beautiful example of the small decorative boxes that were used to carry perfume and scents when traveling. The scent would be soaked into a sponge that would be placed inside the box with a grille to cover the sponge. Silver vinaigrette boxes were gilded where the sponge would touch the metal to protect from corrosion. This vinaigrette box has a beautiful etched floral design on both sides of the exterior, similar to other Colen Chesire vinaigrette boxes. Finished with scalloped edges and a shield shaped cartouche with a monogram. There is an ornate floral and scroll design grill and gold gilt finish interior.
Monogram appears to be EJ
