These two Victorian bookplate prints depict late-19th-Century, seasonal scenes on each side of a single page. One is titled, "A Nursery Pantomime", and features a young girl performing a dance ("a merry minuet"), along with her pet dog up on its hind legs.
This artist-signed (Drawn by C.T. Garland), black & white print is from the 1894 Illustrated London News Christmas Number. This charming, vintage magazine illustration of a nostalgic, Victorian Christmas scene is accompanied by a poem. The poetry verse describes the cute, playful theatrical mimicking of the great English tradition, the panto, by the stage struck child and her co-operative canine companion.
Or if one prefers, the reverse features another engraving, this one with the title, "The Christmas Hamper". Pyjamas-clad Professor Jinks, with his dog Norwood in his library or study, is unpacking the contents of a wicker hamper basket - a farcically-sized fowl is enclosed. This comical, artist-signed print (Drawn by Stanley Berkeley) also bears a descriptive verse of Brother Jim's holiday prank.
These LARGE 1890s engravings measure 11 3/4" x 16 1/4" (approx.) including margins; the image area dimensions are 9" x 12 1/2" (approx.). The image of this piece of Christmas-related memorabilia / ephemera has been accommodated completely by a large-format scanner. These Victorian-era British prints are in very good condition with little of the attendant signs of age and wear and each is eminently suitable for framing - perhaps as a decorative holiday accent for your home - the choice is yours as to which side you display.
