This is a genuine original magazine advertisement from a 1953 issue of the Ladies' Home Journal.
This full-colour, vintage beverage ad features an artist-signed illustration by Hall of Fame illustrator Joe Bowler. The picture is of a holiday scene with an extremely attractive (there's more than a hint of Marilyn Monroe gorgeousness, right?) young woman with short blond hair doing a little Christmas decorating and/or gift-wrapping. She's looking very Mid-Century Modern-ly stylish in a long, belted smock/shirt in a bold striped pattern. She's enjoying a bottle of the advertised product while kneeling on the floor and tying a red ribbon and a sprig of holly around the neck of her little, seal point kitten - what a festive feline!
The ad copy accompanying this great illustration highlights that Pepsi "refreshes without filling" as, "Holidays wouldn't be holidays without abundant hospitality. But happily even holiday abundance is no longer measured in the number of inches it adds to our waistlines."
This advertisement is one of a long-running series that Pepsi-Cola ran in the 1950s that came to be known as The Sociables. The campaign featured illustrations by top-notch commercial artists that portrayed a more stylish, urban and suburban sensibility as opposed to its main competitor's ads. Pepsi used scenes with sophisticated, society types of attractive, affluent adults in contrast to Coca-Cola's depiction of small-town, family-orientated Americana. Many of the 'Pepsi Generation' ads of this era resemble Mid-Century fashion illustrations (in an effort to appeal to women), such was the quality of the artists and the subjects and motifs displayed.
This LARGE 1950s advert measures 10 3/8" x 13 3/4" (approx.). The image of this piece of retro advertising memorabilia / ephemera has been accommodated completely by a large-format scanner. This Fifties print ad is in very good condition (the centre of the top edge has minimal creasing) and is eminently suitable for framing.
