This is a genuine original magazine advertisement from a 1954 issue of the Ladies' Home Journal.
This full-colour, vintage beverage ad features an artist-signed illustration by renowned (on both sides of the Atlantic) commercial artist, Lynn Buckham. Here we have a picture of a beach scene with an attractive couple enjoying a romantic getaway among the sand dunes. The seashore-stylish woman in Bermuda shorts plays with a black poodle. A fair-haired man smiles in approval of the standing-on-its-hind-legs pet trick. There is a jaunty casualness in the couple's dress - her with a nautical neckerchief, and him with a sweater draped over his striped shirt shoulders.
The ad copy accompanying this great illustration highlights that Pepsi "refreshes without filling" as, "Maybe it's the the popularity of the beaches that's helped to make the world so figure-conscious. Or maybe it's today's finer figures, and the pride their owners take in them, that have made the beaches popular."
This advertisement is one of a long-running series that Pepsi-Cola ran in the 1950s that came to be known as The Sociables. The campaign featured illustrations by top-notch commercial artists that portrayed a more stylish, urban and suburban sensibility as opposed to its main competitor's ads. Pepsi used scenes with sophisticated, society types of attractive, affluent adults in contrast to Coca-Cola's depiction of small-town, family-orientated Americana. Many of the 'Pepsi Generation' ads of this era resemble Mid-Century fashion illustrations (in an effort to appeal to women), such was the quality of the artists and the subjects and motifs displayed.
This LARGE 1950s advert measures 10 1/2" x 13 3/4" (approx.). The image of this piece of retro advertising memorabilia / ephemera has been accommodated completely by a large-format scanner. This Fifties print ad is in very good condition and is eminently suitable for framing.
