Description: A large and heavy 1888 bronze medal by Bart van Hove the famous Dutch sculptor issued in the Netherlands. The medal depicts an angel sitting with a branch in one hand and a laureate in the other. There is also a puto blowing a horn standing next to the angel with a shining star above it all. The obverse also has the legend "NATIONALE TENTOONSTELLING VAN OUDE EN NIEUWE KUNSTNIJVERHEID 'S GRAVENHAGE 1888" which translates to "National Exhibition of Old and New Art Management, The Hague 1888." The design itself is signed BART VAN HOVE SC at about 4:30 O'clock. The reverse of the medal has a wreath with a blank center indicating the medal was probably made to be engraved with information about the recipient suggesting this was an award medal. The reverse has markings which says "BEGEER UTRECHTSCHE" which according to the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, which has a similar medal on display, suggest that the piece was made by Royal Utrecht Factory of Silver Works of C.J. Covet. The medal has no edge markings. The piece has a beautiful brown patina with some orange or red tones. It is a truly nice looking large and heavy medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
