Rare Beautiful Victorian Maiden Lady with Lamb Etched by James J. Calahan (1860-1910)
A 19th Century etching signed Calahan and dated 83 which indicates that he would have done this when he was 23 years old. The detail is extraordinary just amazing how he captured her beauty as she sits with her pet lamb. I wish I could find out more about this piece and this lady but I was unable to find a thing. J.J. Calahan was a self taught Etcher from New York. During the 1880s-90s, he translated paintings of European masters (such as Fortuny and Gerome) into etchings for J.R.W. Hitchcock"s portfolio-books on etchers. He also produced some original compositions which he exhibited with the NY Etching Club.
