C Smith 1856 Signed by British Artist, Oil Painting On Canvas, Sea Side Town With Victorian Bathing Machines On The Beach. These were rolled into the ocean so mostly women could bath in privacy. They would change in the booth, swim and get right back into the shack on wheels. Painted in 1856 this wonderful oil painting looking down from a coastal cliff at a beach resort and town. There are fishing boats on the beach and a sail boat out beyond the rock jetty breakwater. The painting was relined some time in the past 30 year so the paint is very stable with no noticeable restorations. Looking at it with a black light there are a few small spots of inpainting in the sky and one small spot just above the jetty in the ocean. The painting measures 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide. The original wood gesso frame measures 18 inches tall and 23-1/2 inches wide. There are cracks in the corners of the frame but it seem stable and rigid. The frame has a few spots of old restorations. The painting is signed lower left corner, 'C. Smith 56.'
