This is a mid 1800’s pastel of a woman looking up to the cross. Because she is nude I am identifying her as Mary Magdalen. At first I thought she was the Virgin Mary, but after researching I realized Mary Magdalen was usually painted nude. Mary Magdalene was a figure in the Bible's New Testament who was one of Jesus's most loyal followers and is said to have been the first to witness his resurrection. This painting was done with the influence of an old masters hand. I do not see a signature. It is in its original frame with a burgundy velvet mat behind glass. The pastel is in great condition. Inside the mat the pastel measures 12 inches wide and 13-1/2 inches tall. It looks nice in its original frame that measures 22-1/4 inches wide and 23-3/4 inches tall. Frame does have some missing gesso and light paint loss at corners. The original back paper has become brittle with age and has some tears. If you would like a new back paper please let me know and I will have it put on free of charge.
