A seagull is stretching his wings after landing on a wooden pylon. The artist was able to capture very nice lighting and water reflections on this watercolor painting. The painting is in great condition with no scratches, holes or tears. It sets in a triple mat ready to be put into your own matching frame. The painting itself measures 12 inches tall and 22-1/2 inches wide. The mat measures 18 inches tall and 28 inches wide. The painting is signed lower left, Ellen Leupold. It is titled on an artist label on verso, Fisherman’s Wharf.

Ellen was born December 3, 1932 in Dedham, Massachusetts, the youngest of 4 girls, and spent much of her early life in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada. She was an accomplished artist and her love of the rugged coastlines of the northeast is apparent in her award-winning watercolors. After graduating from Boarding School she enrolled at McGill University in Montreal. A year later she transferred to Tufts University as a pre-med major. After retirement she took up painting. Her watercolors have been exhibited widely in Colorado. In 1998 one of her watercolors was chosen in the top 200 of the National Arts for the Parks competition out of 2600 entries. In 2002 another painting was among the top 100 in the National Arts for Parks competition, and was taken on a national tour all over the United States for a year. One of her earlier paintings, which she called, ‘Spring Thaw,’ is displayed above the fireplace in the main floor library at Frasier Meadows Center, Boulder, CO. She was a member of artists associations in Boulder (BAA), Longmont (LAG), and Louisville (LAA), as well as the Colorado Watercolor Society (CWS). She died in Boulder November 9, 2013.
