I found this at an Estate Sale in Colorado. It appears that this was an old Amber Pin with a C Handmade Catch. "C" CATCH The earliest catches were simple bends of metal shaped like the letter C The pin was kept within the C with tension created by the pin against the fabric to which it was attached. Some pins were held in place by pressure of a bend in the pin which pressed against the C. This type of catch was not very secure because the pin could slip out of the C. C catches are generally always hand made. A C catch of some type was in use from about 1850 to 1910.
This piece was made into a necklace. I would have never done this. This amber has digits and voids. Makes me think it is natural but, I am not an expert on amber so please look at all the photos as part of the description. All I know is it came from an old vintage estate where the owner passed away from old age. She had so much old jewelry and I do not buy jewelry. This piece caught my eye and I decided to purchase it. If you need more pictures please let me know. The nugget measures 1-1/8 inches wide and about 2 inches long. The 925 Sterling Silver Chain measures end to end 17-3/4 inches. it has 2 markings near the clasp. One says 925 and the other says, Italy 925.
