LENGTH of button hook when retracted: 2 inches - LENGTH completely open: 3 inches - DIAMETER of MOP sleeve: 6mm - WEIGHT: 7.4 grams
Victorian chatelaines were usually shaped as Victorian belt hooks - often having one or more chains attached, ending in watch swivels. Chatelaines were created before women's clothing consistently included pockets. The chatelaine held a variety of household and personal needs: keys, scissors, tiny coin purses, button hooks, match safes, and etc. easily interchangeable because of the swivel findings.
This listing is for a small, very feminine button hook. Because of the small size, this is probably a glove button hook. The hook is retractable. Retracted by means of turning the MOP sleeve. The metal is gold vermeil over base metal. The cap, which holds the jump ring used to attach the hook to a chatelaine chain, is clearly marked with the date of Sept. 21, 1875.
No damages, nor wear to the metal or MOP sleeve. Smoothly moving retraction mechanism.
Wear as part of a chatelaine or as a very interesting pendant which will surely elicit the question: "What is it?!"
