This appears to be an Edwardian pencil case - possibly Victorian, made of papier mache which has been lacquered. The interior of the case is painted a warm orange/red. While the illustration on the lid looks to painted, I think it is actually a wonderfully detailed color lithograph in the French Court style -accented with gilding. Also, note the faux crackle surface.
The case has a functionally secure closure button. Perfect as a companion for a traveling writing desk or as an Edwardian school room accessory.
