This wonderful antique Christmas ornament features a molded composition or clay face Santa Claus figure riding in a mica glittered fiberboard or cardboard sail boat. The Santa figure has a faded red suit made of cotton batting, a white cotton beard, and old cotton pipe cleaner chenille "fur" trim around his cap.The heavy, stiff cardboard canoe is 3-3/4 inches high by 4" wide, heavily encrusted in thick mica glitter.
There are no labels or markings - this type of decoration was made in both Germany and Japan between the two World Wars. An ornament just like this can be seen on page 148 of Robert Brenner's Christmas Revisited price guide book. It doesn't state the country of origin but does date it to the mid 1920s. The boat is in good condition other than expected mica loss. The Santa figure has minor soiling to the red cotton batting.
