A very rare complete boxed set of composition bird Christmas ornaments from 1950s Japan. They have silvered glass ball ornament heads and bodies with painted white-rimmed black eyes. Their wings and tail feathers are made of fluffy chenille. The birds are about 2 inches long by 2-1/2" across the wings. There are a dozen ornaments: four chartreuse, three each pink and dark green, and two turquoise blue. Each has a gold thread hanger. The dark green chenille has some faded spots, the other colors have held up well over the last 60 or 70 years. The cardboard box has writing on the lid (Birds), and an old May Company price tag of 10 cents each.
