These small colored glass feather tree size Christmas ornaments were Japan's attempt to copy German kugels. They date to 1920 or earlier Like the original kugels, the mercury silvering is inside the glass and the color is within the glass itself, not painted or sprayed on. The metal caps are attached in the same manner as kugels but are not as heavy or ornate as those found on authentic kugels.
The turquoise blue egg or drop shape ornament is 2-1/4 inches high. Most of the inner silvering has degraded, leaving the upper half or so transparent. The dark green egg shape ornament has vertical panels of bumps or bubbles molded into the glass and is 2 inches high. This one too has lost most of the inner mercury, and it has some dirt in the ridges and crevices of the panels. You can safely clean the ornament as long as no moisture gets inside, as there is no outside finish. The metal cap slides a bit and there's a spot of rust to the edge. Both ornaments have fairly rare shapes for Japan kugels.
