A set of four colorful Christmas putz gnome figures from 1950s Japan. They're 2-1/2 to 3 inches tall, with molded paper maché or paper pulp hand painted faces and chenille arms, legs, and beards. One has a pine cone body, the others sit on pine cones mounted on thick silver glittered disc bases. Each holds something - a little tree, mushroom, pressed cotton lantern, or foil accordion. I love their super expressive faces - note the tiny painted white teeth. The gnomes are in very good condition with minimal wear, mostly to the little air fern trees they hold. The bottoms are marked Japan.
