This mid 1940s Gurley figural Christmas candle is a larger, 6-1/2 inch tall smiling Santa Claus with one finger raised, holding wrapped gifts in his other arm. It's one of the first made by Gurley Novelty Co. as evidenced by the trimmed label on the bottom reading Patent Applied For- the company very soon stopped making labels to fit individual candles and moved to using basic round labels that fit multiple shapes. Also, the red coloring used in the earliest Gurley candles faded to tomato soup red fairly quickly, so they changed the red coloring agent to be more fade resistant.
The tip of one black boot is scuffed, showing the red base underneath. There is slight age soiling to the white areas, easily cleaned with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol if desired. The candle is unlit and in very good condition for its 65-plus year age.
