Kansas GAR bronze or copper medal pin, 1-5/8" long by 7/8" high with grasshopper in grass, the word Kansas below. The back is marked Patent Applied For. A brass bar for ribbon insertion is across the at lower back of the pin.
The pin is the upper part of a departmental badge of the Grand Army of the Republic, which was an association of Civil War veterans, dissolved in 1956 upon the death of the last surviving member. The GAR "departments" primarily encompassed states or territories, and most of the departments had their own badge. The first mention I could find of someone owning the Kansas grasshopper badge was dated 1888. The complete original Kansas badge would have had a red ribbon below the grasshopper, from which dangled a metal sunflower emblem. First class shipping in USA is free.
