This scarce figural glass Christmas ornament was made in Western Germany in the 1950s. An older but much less attractive version is shown in Lightner's antique German ornament book Christmas Rarities, valued at $350 to $400. While probably a good 20 years or so newer, this 1950s version is also rare, not appearing in my Brenner or Johnson ornament books at all.
The smiling wide-mouthed green frog plays a banjo and sits atop a red ball decorated with white mica glitter snow frost. His eyes, mouth, fingers, toes, and back stripes are hand painted. The ornament is 4-1/2 inches high and in absolutely wonderful condition for its age and type with only slight wear to the mica snow cap decoration and a few tiny rub marks to the red finish at the bottom of the ball. The tin cap is either not marked or cannot be read but the style is consistent with post-war West German metal ornament caps.
