Incredible, isn't it - the way the old artisans could carve something this delicate from elk antler or bone. Early to mid-Victorian era, Bohemian carvers - not unlike the Swiss Black Forest carvers - look at the slender legs on those dogs. Yes, one has gone missing on each of the dogs standing, over the nearly 200 years since it was carved (front leg, dog to far left, and center) but little else by way of flaw to report. Even the leafy trees remain. Incredible little works of art, aren't they? I'll be offering up my collection of these, each sold separately, in weeks coming. It's taken me decades to collect them all. RARE, you'll see them in the jewelry collections of London's British Museum, the V&A, and in Paris in the Louvre, as well. Mounted hinged pin and c-clamp are in silver metal. I never wear these. They're strictly in my cabinet display, along with carved snuff boxes and cigar cases and the like (sold separately or not for sale - pictured with some in the group images).
Very good condition for age and type. As noted, leg and a half gone missing, but look at the personality and delicacy managed in those 3 dogs and in the tree and leaves. Amazing work. The brooch is 2" wide, 1 3/4" tall and about 1/4" thick plus the metal pin apparatus.
I've pulled out the stashes of antique jewelry and will be working at getting it all listed in weeks ahead. Do come back and pick your favorites. SO many treasures! Thank you for following us, and for your many years of business. We love what we do!
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
