Delightful antique French Napoleon III era Palais Royal style pocket watch or pendant display stand, a pair of pressed brass elephant figures, reminiscent of Napoleon's Asian expeditions, supporting a wire framed pannier holding a porcelain backing with hand painted floral decoration and mounted on an alabaster plinth! Likely from the boutiques of 1830-50s Palais Royal of Paris, the old Richelieu Palace that remains today a mere shadow of what it once was in terms of commerce, theatre, society's favorite place to meet and shop. This one a lovely old 'Palais Royal' whimsical pocket watch or pendant display piece. These would have been among the Grand Tour souvenirs available to mid 1800s visitors who strolled along the garden promenade of the old Richelieu residence, known simply as the 'Palais Royal", still a fixture of Paris architecture and historical sites, though not in use as a center of culture, theatre, dining and political intrigue and pageantry it was during the 150 or so years prior to that time. Whimsical in nature, these types of items thrilled both children and adults alike, and those that survive are highly sought after for the same whimsical appeal. Perfect to display a treasured antique or heirloom pocket watch or pendant!
Very good condition. Some slight chipping to the alabaster base and there is one tiny chip to the porcelain insert, visible in the pink outer bordering. No other damage or repairs. See pictures for measurements.
