Fabulous antique French Napoleon III or Victorian era 12" rosewood dressing chest or vanity box with ornate machined or engraved brass inlays including reticulated cartouche with monogram and working lock & key! Boxes, boxes, boxes, I just love them! This one an old dressing or vanity box with the interior fitted to hold perfume & vanity bottles, implements, brushes, etc. but they've all gone missing over the years. The exterior is the real treasure though, don't you just love the rosewood veneers with contrasting fruitwood band around the lid, canted corners and that lovely incised decoration in the brass inlays. A truly beautiful decorative piece whether or not you decide to find replacement contents. It could also be 'hollowed' out, remove the interior fittings and reline in a fine silk to use as your own treasure chest. A marvelous old French box!
Very good condition. As noted, the interior fittings are intact except for an upper tray that would have held sewing or vanity implements, it's just missing the contents (four bottles in the rear, brush in the removable open-topped inner box, etc. There is a small foil lined tea caddy compartment complete with its original lid on the right. There is a veneer chip to the bottom front canted corner and a small on on the left side of the front panel (where the base portion meets the top). Working lock & key. See pictures for all measurements.
