Exceptional & rare antique French Napoleon III era 12 7/8" writer's box, escritoire/ecritoire or lap desk with elegant kingwood veneers, serpentine shaped top and stationery lid with gorgeous "tumbling blocks" marquetry inlay, finished rosewood interior with stationery slots, storage and two cut crystal inkwells! WOW! Not marked but I would expect to see Tahan, Vervelle or Sormani on that lock plate for sure given the style and quality. Beautiful marquetry inlay and, if you look at it long enough, it starts to appear three dimensional reminiscent of an M.C. Escher work :). A magnificent piece!
Very good condition. As you can see, there is no loss, lifting or damage to that stunning marquetry inlay. There is one small segment of veneer missing from the right side of the folding writing surface lid and what appears to be a veneer fill on the lower right of the front near the hinge. I didn't notice at first but the right side hinge on the rear stationery lid has one side missing the machined decoration, not sure if that means it has been replaced or just an original flaw. Original writing surface intact but with signs of age and it does have a working lock with original old bronze & steel skeleton key. See pictures for all measurements.
