We've had some really fine antique English and French papier mache boxes over the years and you can always find a use for one of these matching antique papier mache trays in tandem with the boxes. They're great for fruit or calling cards, or to organize & display a collection of patch boxes, snuff boxes - you name it. And they're great hung on the wall, too. This is just such an one papier mache fruit or calling card tray, or perhaps a breads and cakes tray. In any case, it's a fine old one, mid-1800s and English, possibly from Jennens & Bettridge, though one of the 40% that went unsigned. The elegant gilt ormolu handle is hinged and swings up to make a basket of it, or down if you want to hang it on the wall. Mother of pearl inlays and even the hand painted flowers that accent the tray are really still elegant though with a small chip or loss to the paint in places. Scalloped rim, nice and relatively deep, it's a great piece! Take a look at our other papier mache pieces to find some that match it in style. You're sure to want a box to go with it, right?
Very good condition. A few of the pointed spots along the rim have been chipped off with one having a bit of wood filler visible from the back. As noted above, there is some wear tot he painting or gilt enamel accenting in places and possibly a chip to the pearl inlay in a few spots but overall fine shape. The handle is undamaged, securely attached to the dish and works just fine. See pictures for all measurements.
