Fabulous MASSIVE 25.75" wide antique French Napoleon III or Victorian era hand carved mantel clock, 22" tall with regal lion rampant figures on each side, floral garland and working Japy Freres & Cie. marked clock movement! Very unique, this one in the Black Forest carved case style but very French with the lions and floral garland. It almost looks as though it was meant to be the cornice or crown finial of a larger piece of furniture with its depth, the depth of the carvings at only 2.5" (not counting the small base support). The clock face with enamel numerals and an ornate reticulated brass center. The clock is working and it seems to run just a little fast but it's running and the back of the movement bears the marking of the notable French maker "Japy Freres & Cie". Impressive all the way around, great for a fireplace mantel!
Very good condition. The case is in heavy, solid carved walnut and has only a tiny nip or two to the wood that I can see. The spots where the thick, wide walnut panes were joined before the carving process are visible at each side but those are not breaks (wide planks glue joined to achieve the desired width of the piece then carved). No damage to the clock that I can see, the inner workings/movement appear to have recently been professionally cleaned, oiled and adjusted and it is working. I monitored it for several hours and it only seems to be running a few minutes fast. See pictures for all measurements.
