Another superb late 1800s French box, this one in elegantly grained old hardwood, an elaborately designed shape that is accented in the most opulent dore bronze appliqués. The cartouche up top being figural and could be taken for the Sun King (Louis XIV), but I think it is only the brilliance and fine detail of it that suggests it. This stunning box would have come out of the Empire Revival period that enjoyed popularity during the reign of the last Emperor of France, Napoleon' nephew, known as Napoleon III (c.1850-70, roughly) or within a decade or two following as that Empire style continued to find its way into decor around the world. The larger size of this one and the nice condition of the interior makes it one you'll enjoy putting to use as it was intended. Beautiful old thing, isn't it.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the old warm satin-like wood grain finish is just brilliant against the counterpoint of the high gold of the dore bronze appliqués that enhance the form. There remains a gold embossment on the inside of the silk moire lined interior, "Reballet", but I am not sure where that was located. It is large, but reminds me of the type of elegant boxes that were filled with layers of the finest bonbons, chocolatier's confections (in paper trays, cups). The boxes lasted long after the gift of fine chocolate and confectionary masterpieces had been consumed by the fortunate recipient of such a gift. Would that we had the working key to fit this working lock, but at listing time we do not have an old one to replace it with. If we do match one up we'll annotate the listing to say so. Box is 11.5" widest and 8.5" front to back, 4.25" high when closed. Large and just stunning to look at in person.
