Fabulous antique French Napoleon III or Victorian era 12 3/4" desk or jewelry box, ebonized walnut veneers with ornate brass & white metal boulle inlay, double door serpentine facade with working lock & key and eglomise or reverse painted glass panel inset in the lid featuring a figural fox hunt scene with hunters on horseback & hounds! Don't you just love this one! The best of both worlds with its ornate boulle inlays and the eglomise painting centered in the lid. AND, the painting is in one of the most popular of themes, a countryside scene with hunters on horseback and hounds surely on the chase for some small game or another, fox or hare. The painting is referred to as "eglomise", meaning that it is hand painted on the back or under side of the glass panel. Popular in the Victorian era and you often see them inset in papier mache pieces or smaller jewelry souvenir caskets. I believe this might be the first I've seen with the combination of the painting and boulle though I could be mistaken. In any event, rare and marvelous!
Very good condition. No lifting or loss to the boulle inlay though there are a few surface marks to the veneer and a tiny chip or two. There is also some separation or bubbling of the painting along or at the bottom corners, visible in the images. The interior has been relined in a cream colored moire silk style fabric. There is also a very subtle bend to the lid panel but it does close and lock by pushing down on the front right corner where the lock is. Working lock and key though the key is not original. See pictures for measurements.
