Gorgeous antique English Copeland's Spode marked 10pc 10 1/4" dinner plate set with opulent raised 18k gold enamel decoration, green enamel 'jewels' on pale canary yellow borders and all in wonderful condition! The backs bear the several marks or enamel stamps and also double marked for the Chicago retailer Burley & Co..
Burley and Company was founded in 1884 from the former Burley and Tyrell, who had advertised themselves as the largest importers of china and glassware. I found no information about when they went out of business, but the latest reference I found to them in a quick search was 1915-1917.
Burley and Company also had there own artists on staff to do china decorating and monogramming. They ordered from some of the best maufacturers of the day including Minton, Haviland, Copeland-Spode, and probably others. In some cases, they commissioned items exclusively for Burley and Co.
A beautiful set for the upcoming Holiday Season!
Very good to excellent condition. One plate has a rim chip but it is really only visible from the side and/or bottom of the plate. Possibly very slight wear to the gold enamel but nothing that stood out when photographing them. See pictures for measurements.
