Slightly folk-art like, innocent as the sitter, this artist's oil painting remembers a young French soldier ahead of or during WWI, in uniform and a very young but resolute face. I love this little painting. Surely cherished, makes one hope eternally that this was not the last image of this young soldier. The frame is a heavy old oak box of a thing, as you can see by the closed back. Almost a shrine of sorts. Makes me wonder. He looks so young. The frame is 14.5" x 12.25" an dis 2" thick. The painting aperture shows the portrait as 8.5" x 6". A smaller painting, intimate theme.
Very good to excellent, the frame and painting both have a folk art feel to them, rather than astute sophistication, which works with the youth and innocence of the young soldier. I'm sure they are original to one another. No damage to the oil painting, which is signed by the artist (I can't make it out, sorry). Photos show the old oak frame for your review. Dating this one c.1813-18.
