Oil painting on stretched linen canvas, c.1840-60s

"Artie" with lace collar, no frame, 30" x 24" x .75", ready to frame or hang

Look at those beautiful brown eyes, and the darling boy wrapped around them. This is a "breeches" portrait of the young master, probably at the point in time when he transitioned from being a baby, dressed in white gowns and with long hair as his Mommy's baby, into a little man, curls cut to a shorter cap of hair and moving from baby clothing to the breeches and jacket, lace collar of a young man. Often referred to as an important moment of passage, because from this point onward he is groomed to be a strong and elite society man. A charming painting, we can't find the signature but suspect a quick cleaning might reveal it in that darker bottom right area of the work. We bought it for his inherent charm and appeal, and not because of the artist on this one. The composition and palette combine with subject to create that perfect painting to accent any room, though. Large painting, ready to hang as it is, frame, or display on a shelf or dresser top. That stately and rare portrait of a young boy, to the manner born.

Very good condition for age and type. I can immediately see that there has been some restoration to the painted surface there in the area above his knees. Slightly different but not distracting, and I don't see any corresponding patch on the back side, so not sure what that is about. Maybe a scratch and someone painted into the painting. In any case, just bringing it to your attention. And of course some darkening of the old varnish, a bit of darkening typical of the old paintings. We have not had this painting cleaned, and find the darker palette very appealing. Please look it over well, though. No holes or damage to the original canvas, and the painting is gorgeous!

Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
