Just in from Paris. These whimsical items still capture our hearts and imagination. They would have also in their own time, when such crowd pleasers lined the shelves of boutiques in the Palais Royal, Paris, and tempted their way into Grand Tour traveler's luggage as well as became gifts and souvenirs of dignitaries and elite society who frequented that center of cultural enrichment. A personal favorite of mine, the old cranberry and opaline egg items set into ormolu framework and perhaps, as with this one, an alabaster plinth, are always a great decorative accent for any home - modern to one filled with antiques. The c.1820-50 item you see here is nearly 7" tall overall, and is what the French call a "vide poche" or quite literally, an empty pocket. It is an item which would have been on just bout every bedside table, and to which one's pocket watch, chain, jewelry and pocket items (knife, coins) could be deposited for the night. They usually did have a watch stand like this one, the idea being that one's pocket watch would also serve as a clock at bedside when not in use. I've seen these used at table, too, as condiment or open salts, bonbon servers, or just as place card holders with charming round menu in place where you now see the watch in our photos. You'll find a myriad of ways to enjoy this one. (watch is not included - it's only a prop our photographer uses).
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no chips or hairlines, no cracks to that lovely old cranberry glass oval (or half egg) and it's a nice large 4" long one. Likewise, no chips or cracks to that original alabaster plinth/base, and the wirework also seems to me to be complete and in fine order with the pressed brass leaves completing the vine-like framework. A broad variety of watches will work on this one, as it's a larger flat round as you can see. All measurements noted directly on photos.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
