A fabulous 18th to 19th century panel hand carved entirely of a single slab of wood, and showing a magnificent mythical Chimera. The dragon-headed monster with a lion-like body, it exists here within a Renaissance "Grotesques" square plaque. The Gothic influences are also seen, of course. Perhaps this panel was originally part of a cabinet, but it might have been carved as a stand-alone piece of art, as thick as the panel is. Measurements are noted on photos for your review. The panel is not quite square at 10.25" x 9.75" and it is 1" thick. Frame it or hang it just as it is (hanging loop on back, or add a flatter version of your own), or just lean it up on your book shelf or table top. I think it would be fabulous, in fact, raised a few inches on 2 wooden poles that are also stuck into a nice plinth/stand. Definitely one you'll love no matter how you decide to display it.
Very good to excellent, without any cracks nor hairlines. I don't see any chips, either, though look it over carefully in case I missed any minuscule ones at leaf or flame tips, please. Fabulous detail and anatomy, rippling muscles and breathing fire. Thick solid wood.
