Cigar serving chest with pheasants up top, a Black Forest staple for the c.1850-1900 Grand Tour traveler, and all who loved the carver's arts. You love hand carved Black Forest "Animalier" movement works. You love hunt themes and wildlife, dogs. This is one of the finest you'll see all year, and one of the most charming. A testament to the Master carvers of mid-1800s, Switzerland mostly, this box is made from one solid slab of wood, and a carver's blade and understanding of his craft. Removing all that is not this scene, the unsigned carver reveals the large hound on top trying to find hone in on the game bird crouched in front of the log. You see how the artist (carver) not only captures the nature of the scene, but the anatomical details and even the coat of dog and bird's plumage. These early ones are often true works of art, and this one certainly is. One looks for a signature on a box this fine. But I find none.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, a large and elegant carved pair of birds or perhaps pheasants, grouse, up top and raised on carved cabriole legs. It has slight warp to the shelves for cigars. While tip of beaks are blunted, no real damage to speak of on those 2 pheasants carved up top. If you're handy with carving or with a Dremmel, you can certainly smooth out that top bird's beak and improve it easily. We left it showing as it is, helping you to evaluate the chip there. A tip or two of a long leaf missing, but no other damage to note. No key at listing time, but the lock does appear to be a working one. This is a larger chest and will hold 44 cigars. The chest is 11.5" wide, 10" tall when closed, and 8" front to back.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
