Antique French Bank, Business Folio, Portfolio, Leather "Banque de Paris", 1909
A perfect movie prop, or shelf, tabletop decorator item, this antique French leather money bag, receipts or checking pouch, portfolio or folio, in gold embossed with the bank's name, "Banque de Paris", and a handwritten date of 1909. I'd say it's a good deal older than that, and that the notations are from a later user or owner, but it's somewhere between 1850-1909, for certain. The working lock has no key at listing time, but usually these can be relatively easy to replace or have keyed if you wish to have a working key. It does latch and hold tightly, and the slide-button opener releases that lock cleanly as it is, and in 3 locations for expansion. The brass is polished to a high gold finish which accents well against the black leather, and repeats in the gold embossments. The maker is noted in a Brevete (made) engraved mark on hardware and we've shown that for your review. The purveyor's shop name is E. Meyer, 42, rue Beaubourg (Paris). In stamp: J. Mondaud, and in ink: Fevrier 1909 (February, 1909). These are rather rare to find and are highly collected in Europe, particularly the bank ones.
Good to very good for age and type, the exterior has a wonderful antique look to the way it has aged, and the black leather has a nice finish. The baffles, as you can see, are a bit tattered. The card separators on the interior remain intact, and we've tried to show the item to you from all angles for your review. Some foxing to leather at the folds and corners. This one has the charm of lots of use. One wonders what business of Paris used it. The folio is 12" x 6" and is 2" in depth when resting empty, and expands to about 6" thick front to back, if baffles are expanded.
