Well, over the many years we've been offering fine old mid-1800s papier mache items, we've learned that this type, this gold tinted decorative style with exotic bird, gold rocaille painted on them were made at the Jennens & Bettridge manufacturer's center in London. They are not all signed, though some are, but they are very 'signature' in the quality and style. So we know that this is an unsigned J&B papier mache item, and of course J&B was the finest of the fine - best of the best at their trade. We see them in museums around the world. To find this smallish item so beautifully preserved is a real joy, as they're the rare pieces. This one is an 'aide d' memoire' as the French called them, which would have held a printed and folded little booklet of calendar pages and blank pages on which to note addresses, appointments, etc., with the small pencil that you see, which is the clasp closure when in place in the loops provided. The little notebook is gone, but the pencil and cover together are a great find. Beautiful paintings on both sides - truly a work of art, and the 170 or so year-old precursor to your smart phone - think about it.
Very good to excellent condition throughout , without breaks or chips and even the entirety of the paintings on each side (front and back) remain in fine condition with very little if any loss or even crazing. Larger than usual for these little note card items (also called 'necessaire'), please note the measurements in the listing photos. Missing the original paper interior note booklet that would have had an intaglio printed calendar for the year it was purchased, which we think would probably be about 1840-50.
