We think of these sets as being "bonne nuit", though they were also made as you see here, without the upturned tumbler or drinking glass that often attends these. This one has no evidence of any rubs that would indicate it ever had the upturned glass topper, so we think it likely it is one made for table use and not the 'good night' or bedside table water service type we see later in France. The fine old white opaline is in finest form here, adorned with hand enameled 18k gold trim and further adorned with raised applied enamel dots, making it jewel-like. It survives in fine form, too, without a single nip or chip or lost dot, even. Perfect to use at table for 2, a wine decanter for a duet or personal setting, or on that tabletop next to your bed or favorite lounging chair. Also fabulous for bath salts or oils in a well-appointed master bath. You might just prefer to display with your other magnificent French opaline items, however.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There are no chips or nips, no cracks or hairlines and not even losses to all of that hand applied raised dot decorative enamel work other than some rubs to the gold here or there. Amazing and surely an item that has been displayed and treasured over generations rather than used. Still, I love using these old beauties, don't you? Very fine!
