Anyone who has followed us for a while knows how much we appreciate the fine old hand carved wood works of art that originated from the Black Forest regions of Europe. These 19th to earliest 20th century figures and animals not only cross the divide between arts & crafts and fine arts, they do it with uncommon evidence of skill, knowledge of anatomy, imaginative design and incredible beauty. From the large "Fruits of the Hunt" plaques with carved game sometimes near life-sized, to the whimsical and charming bears that are popular with just about everyone, these pieces remain today as appreciated and sought after as they were for the early Grand Tour travelers who collected them, and the hunting and ski lodges that displayed them as essential parts of their decor and ambiance. The pieces cross over now to French Country and English Manor decor, as well as many others, and we're so pleased to offer them.

A profile carving of a lion passant with his paw resting on a rather French looking rocaille or acanthus, this architectural fragment would have probably topped a large mirror frame or perhaps a hunter's cabinet or hutch. You see the 2 wooden mounting pegs still in place and we're leaving them there in case you wish to use this to top a doorway. You know the look I mean, I'm sure. Nicely carved, it's not huge at just under 12" long, but it's totally appealing and fun - decorating is all about the details, isn't it. You'll have the perfect spot for this one. I've seen these made into trim on shelves, as well, and added into kitchen cabinetry for that Old World charm. Make it work for you!

Very good to excellent condition without damage, no woodworm, no chips to note. The carving is 11.5" long.
