Dating to 1700s, this traveler's 'necessaire' or etui, a compact little traveler's dream of a case that would have originally housed 2 miniature paintings, perhaps a wife and the children left behind. It survives over 200 years in remarkably good condition for age and type. The shagreen is, as you know, leather from the fine scale underbelly of a stingray, and it was popularly used on many traveler's items for the wealthy and also military officers, etc., in the 1600s through 1800s. The style of the set you see here is typical of last half 1700s, and we see them in museums around the world, and now and then in the inventory of antique shops, priced double to triple our price on this one. These items are rare! All of the very old shagreen clad items are so appealing and so sought after today by collectors of 1700s goods. The rose gold (12k) plaque that serves as cartouche says, 'souvenir', and is also indication of French origin. A most superb offering and we're so pleased to bring it to our collectors.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There are some flaws, but small ones only and quite consistent with the best of these very old items. The 2 primary flaws to note are visible on the outer case, in the form of cracks to the leather. The leather is stable as it is, adhered to the case, itself, and not subject to further loss, but the panels do have this surface flaw. The case closes well, is heavy and just stunning to hold, knowing it must have traveled perhaps through battlegrounds, carrying within the one connection some soldier or officer or traveler had with his loved ones at home. If only it could tell its story! Gold pin pique trim around the edging is at least 12k, maybe higher. Don't miss this fabulous musuem quality item, c. mid-1700s.
